Also known as a “Village on the Lake”, Port Credit is a picturesque lakeside community situated in the south-central area of Mississauga City in Ontario. Enfolded by breathtaking nature parks, recreational bike trails, historic landmarks, and a scenic landscape, Port Credit is popularly known as one of Canada’s most vibrant and energetic places to live, work, and thrive.
History of Port Credit, Mississauga
In 1700, a group of native people from the Ojibwa tribe, known as the Mississaugas, settled around the mouth of the “Mi sinihe” river which meant “Trusting Water”. Port Credit initially started as a trading post where people exchanged or bought goods on credit, that’s why the names Port Credit and Credit River were adopted.
In August 1805, the Mississaugas agreed to sign a land treaty with the British Crown at the mouth of the Credit River. In 1847, however, the Mississaugas left the land, which contributed to the economic growth of Port Credit as the Credit River opened up to commercial expansion. It was short-lived prosperity when a great fire destroyed the west end of the harbour in the mid-1850s. At the same time, the construction of the Grand Trunk and Great Western Railways began which caused to move the trading and commerce away from the village.
In 1889, large industries started arriving in the community and Port Credit gradually began to recover. Companies like St. Lawrence Starch Company and Port Credit Brickyard resuscitated the village’s economy. From then on, travellers and tourists constantly visit Port Credit for its shopping amenities. In 1914, Port Credit was officially incorporated as a Village, and in 1961, it acquired Town status. In 1974, Port Credit was amalgamated into the City of Mississauga. Until the present, Port Credit still retains much of its rich culture and history, architectural character, and comforting vibe.
